Aim: to successfully do a no handed cartwheel, also known as an aerial.
Skills required:
|
You will need:
|
One handed cartwheel (both sides)
Pop cartwheel (A cartwheel where you start normally and bring your hands up halfway through, practicing the end of a aerial)
Dive cartwheel (A cartwheel where you do the start of a aerial but put your hands down halfway through)
|
A trampoline (for less confident people or beginers)
A gymnastics mat or soft ground aka grass (mat is safer)
|
Lets begin!
- First, you need to practice and master your one handed cartwheels, pop cartwheels and dive cartwheels. You should not be attempting a aerial if you aren't confident with the previous cartwheels.
- Once you have mastered those three skills, you must now build a strong and confident run up (if you are on a trampoline, this is not required) so you can push as high as possible and get the best chance of doing an aerial.
- You're getting much closer! Now, I would recommend putting your hands up against a wall, and kicking your leg as high up at possible. Doing this will help you learn what it feels like to kick up just as you start the aerial.
- Now you have all these skills, you are now ready to attempt an aerial!
- To start, run up as fast as you can, and using your leg, you need to push up as high as possible, and make sure your toes are pointed!
- Now, you must turn your body so that you are in a position for a run-up cartwheel, however, this is the bit that a lot of people get frustrated and annoyed. You are so used to doing a cartwheel (and a bit hesitant to do this skill) that you most likely will put your hands down. Don't give up!
- So now you know how to do the basic aerial, you now need to learn how to land it! To land this skill, you must land with the opposite leg to the one you pushed off on.
- Now to help with landing, make sure to keep your legs straight when doing the aerial as this will help you to land a strong landing rather than hurting your leg or landing awkwardly.
- Bring you another leg down and finish the skill, you have now learnt how to do a aerial!
