How to do an aerial by Bella

Aim: to successfully do a no handed cartwheel, also known as an aerial.

Skills required:
You will need:
One handed cartwheel (both sides)

Pop cartwheel (A cartwheel where you start normally and bring your hands up halfway through, practicing the end of a aerial)

Dive cartwheel (A cartwheel where you do the start of a aerial but put your hands down halfway through)
A trampoline (for less confident people or beginers)
A gymnastics mat or soft ground aka grass (mat is safer)

Lets begin!

  1. First, you need to practice and master your one handed cartwheels, pop cartwheels and dive cartwheels. You should not be attempting a aerial if you aren't confident with the previous cartwheels.

  1. Once you have mastered those three skills, you must now build a strong and confident run up (if you are on a trampoline, this is not required) so you can push as high as possible and get the best chance of doing an aerial.

  1. You're getting much closer! Now, I would recommend putting your hands up against a wall, and kicking your leg as high up at possible. Doing this will help you learn what it feels like to kick up just as you start the aerial.

  1. Now you have all these skills, you are now ready to attempt an aerial!

  1. To start, run up as fast as you can, and using your leg, you need to push up as high as possible, and make sure your toes are pointed!

  1. Now, you must turn your body so that you are in a position for a run-up cartwheel, however, this is the bit that a lot of people get frustrated and annoyed. You are so used to doing a cartwheel (and a bit hesitant to do this skill) that you most likely will put your hands down. Don't give up!

  1. So now you know how to do the basic aerial, you now need to learn how to land it! To land this skill, you must land with the opposite leg to the one you pushed off on.

  1. Now to help with landing, make sure to keep your legs straight when doing the aerial as this will help you to land a strong landing rather than hurting your leg or landing awkwardly.

  1. Bring you another leg down and finish the skill, you have now learnt how to do a aerial!

  1. Hi bella,
I like how you put parts in for different places people might try the aeriel and put some instruction or things for beginners to work on before they try an aeriel.
Can you do an aerial or did you learn these from facts online?
Keep up the good work bella and keep on making great posts like this one!

  3. Hi Bella, I enjoyed reading your writing. I really like how you encouraged the person attempting an aerial, and how you said what skills are required to do one. Can you do an aerial yourself? If you can, where did you learn how to?

  4. Hi Bella! I really like your blog post because my sister really wants to learn how to do an aerial. I also learnt that there was more than one type of cartwheel! But on the sixth instruction I got a bit confused, it didn’t make sense to me. From Brooke

  5. Kia ora bella,I like how you‘ve written this in specific steps so people can follow the steps and do an aerial. I think I should try to do one. You could make it a little bit shorter because it is just instructions . Are aerials easy?

  6. Hi Bella. I really liked your writing, and I loved the way how you described your sentences really well, and how you made it really descriptive and understandable. How long does it take to master an aerial? Are they hard or easy to achieve for both beginners and professionals at cartwheels? Keep up the good work!

  7. Hi Bella, I loved reading your instructions. A aerial looks very hard to do. I liked the way how you wrote what they need to know and explained it clearly to the reader. Next time I think you should put a picture/photo of you doing the step (if you know how to do it). Great job! From Angela L
